Grand Lodge cancelled the float program, and with it, our insurance. Dry, secure (and free) storage never materialized and all attempts at finding a way to reliably trailer the float have failed. Therefore, the float has been unavailable this parade season. To keep costs at a minimum, it was decided the storage and transportation issues would best be solved by building a trailer that can haul and store the float. The Shrine has offered a 16' trailer we could use as the foundation for a new trailer. But, with all these options, we would be incurring costs we never anticipated. Liability insurance for the float and trailer would be about $300 per year (coverage would only be in effect during parade season). I guestimate the trailer would be $3,000 in materials and lots of free labor to build. Lots of improvements to the float would add $1,000 or more. Fortunately, annual operating costs would be minimal (except insurance). There is talk around the state of creating an independent float charity that would build, maintain and pay for floats throughout the state. Companies have already shown support for the idea of corporate sponsorships to provide the funds. But this will take 1-2 years to establish. The bottom line is that we either find free storage for the float until we can raise the necessary funds to build a trailer and cover the other costs or we give the float back to Grand Lodge. I am willing to continue the effort of securing funding (local corporate sponsors, etc.) and I firmly believe our participation in our local parades keeps our fraternity in the eyes and minds of the public. We can accomplish this with the existing float or by creating a smaller float on the 16' trailer chassis and tow it behind a pickup. What I need is your opinions and ideas. If I don't find a place to store the trailer in the next 3 weeks, I'm sending it back to Grand Lodge. Thanks for your help.
