From gjohnson65 at gmail.com Fri Apr 8 07:00:09 2011 From: gjohnson65 at gmail.com (Gordon Johnson) Date: Fri, 8 Apr 2011 07:00:09 -0700 Subject: [Gendis] Invitation to show Masonic presence in local GREAT STRIDES charity event Message-ID: Greetings, By now many of you are aware that several local Lodges, and some concordant bodies, have made the decision to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation?s GREAT STRIDES local fundraiser, which will take place at Esther Short Park in Vancouver on Saturday, May 14th. By pooling our contributions, we are afforded certain benefits provided to organizational sponsors. We have *exceeded* the $1,000 ?I?m Walking for? Sign Sponsor level, which will identify Southwest Washington Masons as a sponsor on 600+ signs distributed to and work by the walkers at the event. We are within striking distance of the $1,500 Bronze level, which will identify Southwest Washington Masons on all printed materials, including Walk Talk newsletters *circulated to ~3,000 persons*, display of a sponsor banner at the ? mark, and *the opportunity to host an exhibitor booth* on event day. In addition to sponsoring the event, we hope to show a strong Masonic presence at the event on walk day. This email is to *invite you to register for the walk* and help us demonstrate that strong Masonic presence and support for charity in SW WA. Some key points about Cystic Fibrosis and the CFF: ? Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: o clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and o obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. ? In the US, 4.3 million people carry the faulty CF gene ? 1 in 25 of the population. If both parents are carriers of the faulty gene, there is a 1 in 4 chance with every pregnancy that their child will have Cystic Fibrosis. ? In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond. ? About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year. ? The predicted *median age of survival* for a person with CF is in the *mid-30s*. ? Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a cure. Thanks to the dedication and financial backing of thier supporters--patients, families and friends, clinicians, researchers, volunteers, individual donors, corporations and staff, they are making a difference. ? The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a *nonprofit donor-supported organization*, is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease. ? Cystic Fibrosis Foundation meets the BBB Wise Giving Alliance's Standards for Charity Accountability ? In 1989, CF Foundation-supported scientists discovered the defective gene that causes cystic fibrosis?a monumental breakthrough on the road to a cure. ? Bro. Gordon?s son, Levi, has Cystic Fibrosis. Levi was hospitalized in late December/early January to treat a lung infection with IV antibiotics and intense respiratory therapy. I'm still too weak to attend today but hopefully you can make it. The Hazel Dell parade is May 21st. How about we plan to work on the float next Saturday after the WA4 Easter Egg Hunt? We should have all the parts by then. It's supposed to be sunny (finally). As for me, I didn't get the word out on my situation because the doctors weren't sure what was wrong so I didn't know how long I'd be there. The diagnosis began as a possibly cancerous tumor in my stomach but ended with acute ulcers instead (whew!). Remember, MAC today at 10 am at the VMC.
